Why I Couldn’t Live Without Essential Oils

My first experience with essential oils happened a few years ago when I was working at the Vitamin Shoppe. I was very intrigued by this section in our store and whenever I was assigned to organize and restock the products, I took my time in completing my task, pausing to smell the tester of each oil as I went along. The first time I did this, I learned my lesson about their potency very quickly because by the time I reached the end of the EO display, I was feeling slightly nauseated from the mixture of scents that were stuck in my nose.

(Not exactly sure what essential oils are? No problem…Pause for a moment and watch this video.)

To get the customers more engaged and aware of the oils, we started to diffuse them. They had such a powerful fragrance that they would fill the entire store, which wasn’t exactly a small space. We very frequently got comments and questions about what we were diffusing and people seemed very surprised that the aroma was so powerful. Since our team was always wanting to feel energized at work, we ended up using citrus oils and peppermint in the diffuser most frequently.

When I left this job, I still dabbled every now and then in the oils but was not a serious user. I bought some grapefruit oil as well as a spray blend to use at home, that made me feel peaceful when I smelled it. As I would do my grocery shopping at local health food stores, essential oils would always catch my eye and I would explore the selection that they offered.

It wasn’t until I met Sarah that I allowed my curiosity of aromatherapy and the healing powers of essential oils to fully grasp my attention. Sarah is a yoga instructor and I met her boyfriend at a networking event. After hearing a bit about her, I realized that it seemed like we had a lot in common and I was definitely interested to meet her.

The first time I visited their house, Sarah told me about the oils that she used. They were beautifully displayed in their kitchen and I was overwhelmed by the number of bottles she had. After smelling just a couple, I could tell that there was something different about these than the ones I had previously experienced at the Vitamin Shoppe and other stores. Their fragrance was stronger and smelled more authentic. Sarah explained that these oils were CPTG — certified pure therapeutic grade 100% pure oils that were not diluted with any fillers or chemicals; so pure that you could actually ingest most and use almost all of them topically with no worries.

As she told me this, I recalled that I had seen the warning “for external use only” on many essential oils and aromatherapy products that I had purchased or looked at before. I could practically feel the flick of someone flipping the switch and illuminating the light bulb over my head as I had this realization. I was immediately hooked. I needed to know more about these oils, there benefits and most importantly, where I could get them!

Now, it has been almost two years and I have been faithfully using DoTerra oils since this awesome introduction. My first investment was in the Family Physician Kit (now known as the Family Wellness Kit) and when that arrived, it was like digging into a gold mine. My favorite oils right off the bat were frankincense, On Guard, DigestZen and Breathe.

In my daily life, I currently use peppermint oil the most. It is a lifesaver for itchy/inflamed skin (so for those who have eczema, this is an absolute MUST HAVE); it eases tension headaches–even more so when combined with lavender; it is a cheaper afternoon-pick-me-up than coffee and it is an instant breath freshener.

Other issues that DoTerra’s oils frequently help me with…

Stomachaches – DigestZen

Anxiety – Serenity or Console

Stuffiness or other respiratory issues – Eucalpytus or Breathe

Skin issues – Frankincense, Helichrysum, Lavender

Inability to fall asleep – Ylang Ylang, Cedarwood

And beyond these uses, I have also added oils to my homemade body butter, put a couple of drops in smoothies and also sprinkled some in food recipes as well. The uses for these essential oils is truly endless and they provide an array of benefits.

I’m ready to COME CLEAN!

I’ve been keeping a secret and it’s time to come clean. Read on to find out what it is!

This last Mercury Retrograde was extremely challenging, very frequently frustrating and even a little bit depressing for me. There were a variety of ups and downs that looking back, make that segment of time feel much more drawn out than just a few weeks. There were the usual hiccups with technology, specifically my “smart”phone. Then, my S.O. (significant other) and I tried to take a vacation that ended with an injured hand requiring numerous stitches followed by a quick exit to head back home because of a hurricane headed towards our hometown. Bills and late payment notices were sprouting like weeds. Communication didn’t seem to be going very smoothly with anyone…And then, to put “the icing on the cake,” as they say, I ended up losing my family dog, Cookie–a sweet Maltese-Bijon who had been with us for 12 long years. To put it simply, I made it through some pretty rough times.

Then, Mercury went direct (yeah, I’m a little woo woo…so sue me) and it was like my world suddenly stopped spinning out of control. I started meeting the “right” people at exactly the right time. My schedule had been fairly quiet aside from work, and all of a sudden, I was scheduling coffee meetings and coaching sessions, one after another. And the best thing of all was that the Universe was all of a sudden delivering answers to my current most pressing questions. Wanting to combine my passions for healthy living as well as beauty, I began a search for high quality, CLEAN beauty products. The perfect answers fell almost immediately into my lap.

Before I go on, let me share a bit of history. I began playing with makeup at an extremely young age. I remember scavenging through my mom’s cabinets and looting all of the Clinique and Estee Lauder samples that she was consistently stowing away. It was a goldmine full of lipsticks, glosses, eye shadow palettes, face creams and body lotions. It was like being in a candy store! When I got old enough, around the time I was in middle school, I started going to the corner drugstore with one of my close friends, where we would load up on Cover Girl foundation and Maybelline mascara among other items. In my teenage years, my dream job was most definitely to work for a makeup company. Sephora, Ulta, MAC? Yes, please! Sign me up for any of the above.

As much as I loved makeup, the very first job I landed ended up being a position as a Concession Attendant at a county park that was just down the street from my school, where we were made to wear colorful Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts. I had this job throughout the last couple of years of high school and then when I went away to college, I got part-time jobs at places like Abercrombie Kids, Lowe’s Home Improvement store and various restaurants and fast-food chains. I continued to gravitate away from the idea of working in the makeup industry; after all, I wasn’t a makeup artist and the girls that I typically saw working at my favorite cosmetic stores were a little bit intimidating.

Very recently though, I found myself being accepted as a freelance makeup artist into a company that is viewed as the leading authority in the makeup world; a company whose makeup is applied onto the faces of models at fashion shows the world over. I was immensely grateful for the opportunity and enjoyed learning all that I could in the time that I was there, (about a year and a half). Eventually, I ended up giving up my position as a permanent artist on the team to move on to a job in which I was taking on management responsibilities and a full-time schedule.

Although I did enjoy my opportunity to work with this makeup company, there were moments where I felt out of place there. Despite their representation of supporting individuality, I sometimes felt that I wasn’t perceived to be as good as the other artists on my team. (Why? I’m not sure. Maybe because my signature look didn’t consist of caked-on foundation, photo-shoot worthy contour and false lashes every day. Maybe it’s because my look and the work I do on clients can lean a little more towards the natural side–emphasizing existing features rather than starkly overdramaticizing them.)

In one instance, I was even told this bluntly to my face, in the form of one of my teammates “just wanting to give me a heads up” that others were proclaiming I wasn’t a real artist. This revelation hurt me deeply; more than I wanted to admit. I had always been just fine with being different–in my best moments even proud, but the stunning realization that this seemed to invalidate me as a true makeup artist was devastating.

I now clearly see the signs though, that everything happens for a reason. I have come full-circle to a point where I am seeing that I’m exactly where I need to be–and that is, a place where I am on the road to becoming my own boss, a fearless entrepreneuress, whose talent and purpose is to empower women to embrace better beauty, celebrate their authenticity and create, what I call, a Renewed Life.

So, as I was saying before…Answers came to me with clarity and there was an undeniable synchronicity between certain events that have occurred over the past week or so alone. I believe that I have manifested the right opportunities, the right people and the revelation of my foundational motivations–all at exactly the right time.

And as a result, today, I proudly announce my newly revised title of Holistic Wellness & Beauty Coach. I am a certified Holistic Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and I am acknowledging my love for makeup and beauty by merging those skills into my coaching business, since it is my belief that designing our outer beauty is a way to share our authentic inner beauty with the world.

To support my mind, body and spirit approach to guiding others to elevate their health in a way that is authentic to them, I am expanding beyond simply offering coaching sessions so that I may also teach Clean Beauty classes, offer makeup application services using only the highest quality products that are free from toxins and other ingredients that are known to possibly cause a threat to human health,as well as initiate global conversations that will make women more aware of what they are putting into their bodies and on their skin. I am proud to announce my brand new affiliations with Beautycounter (a company who has a “never” list of over 1500 ingredients that it will NEVER use in its products because of their potential health hazards) and Neal’s Yard Remedies (a company that originated in the UK and offers a variety of low-hazard products, many of which are scented with essential oils. I also happily continue to use and promote the therapeutic grade essential oils offered through DoTerra. (*Note: I would NEVER recommend a company or products that I haven’t used and benefitted from myself so you can trust that I would only choose to rep Beautycounter, NYR and DoTerra because I truly love their products and their values.)

I am so excited to take a fork in the road that leads me on what I feel is the right path on this journey of fulfilling my life’s purpose. I very much look forward to empowering, educating and providing support to others–specifically those who are in a position to inspire or influence other people (a.k.a. “PIPs”). If you are a healthcare professional (nurse, physician’s assistant, massage therapist), a teacher or guidance counselor and of course, a mother, this means you! Having the responsibility of setting a good example and being a good role model for others requires you to be your absolute best and that is what I will enable you to do.
